EKC Folkestone College Construction Department Welcomes Industry Guest Speaker

On 25th March 2026, EKC Folkestone College welcomed Lloyd Brown, from SEC, as part of its ongoing employer engagement programme within the Construction department.

The visit supported students studying across Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas, as well as T Level pathways in carpentry and joinery— programmes designed to develop industry-ready skills through practical, workshop-based learning.

Approximately 40 students attended the session, including learners preparing to begin their Level 2 studies and those already progressing through advanced courses. The cohort also included T Level students specialising in onsite construction with a carpentry and joinery focus, a qualification equivalent to three A Levels that prepares learners for skilled roles within the industry.

Lloyd delivered an engaging and informative presentation, which was well received by students. A lively Q&A session followed, with learners demonstrating strong interest in both trade skills and long-term career progression. Informal discussions continued in the college’s woodwork workshop, where students took the opportunity to seek one-to-one advice on pathways into the industry.

The visit also provided an opportunity to observe the college’s high-quality workshop facilities. Students were actively engaged in detailed joinery projects, working with industry-standard equipment in a professional learning environment that closely reflects current construction practices. These facilities play a key role in supporting the development of advanced woodworking skills.

Tutor, Steve Pitts, supported the session throughout, assisting with introductions, contributing to discussions, and facilitating the workshop visit. His involvement helped ensure the success of the event.

The visit generated valuable conversations around careers and progression routes, including management training pathways within construction, carpentry apprenticeships, and opportunities with local joinery manufacturers and prospective employers interested in developing apprenticeship links with the college, further strengthening connections between learners and industry.
